Meet Joachim Sandbichler,
Owner of the Patio American Grill — our choice for Outstanding Business Philanthropist! This year Joachim & the Patio team raised over $65,000 for Helping Our Women, which was presented to HOW Board member, Nicole Gelinas.
In the past 14 years, Joachim’s exceptional commitment to philanthropy on the Outer Cape has raised over $330,000 to benefit Helping Our Women. Nearly half of these funds have been donated by the Patio American Grill; the remaining monies are raised at the Drag Brunch event the Patio team hosts every summer.
Joachim has created a remarkable culture of philanthropy among his staff as evidenced by the Patio staff, mostly J-1 visa workers, contributions from their daily tips towards an annual staff gift that often meets or exceeds $1,000.
Joachim’s story of philanthropy is also multi-generational. When asked why he does this work for the community, taking on the logistical headaches of orchestrating a fundraising event in the height of the summer season, Joachim talks about his early visits to Provincetown when the AIDS crisis was at its peak. He realized then that it was the women from the Outer Cape towns who were showing up to care for the men ill and dying from AIDS. Now, his philanthropy is focused on honoring the legacy of these women, and through his 14-year commitment to HOW he serves not only some of these actual caretakers, but hundreds of women who live with chronic or serious health conditions in the rural communities of the Outer Cape.
